Legal Metrology Permits Revision of MRP on Unsold Stock Post GST Change

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs (Legal Metrology) has permitted manufacturers, packers, and importers to revise MRP on unsold stock following changes in GST rates vide its notification.

Validity

Effective until 31 December 2025 or exhaustion of stock/packaging, whichever is earlier.

Conditions

  • Original MRP must remain visible.
  • Revised price can only reflect actual GST increase or reduction.
  • Two newspaper advertisements and notices to dealers and Legal Metrology authorities are mandatory.
  • Old packaging may be used till the deadline with corrected MRP applied by stamp, sticker, or online print.

Implication

The notification enables businesses to clear old stock and avoid packaging wastage, but compliance with disclosure and communication requirements is essential.
